INTRODUCTION
The UN Centenary Peace Child Script is designed to promote the Outcomes of the UN’s Summit of the Future, chiefly the Pact for the Future & the Declaration on Future Generations. It draws on them to tell a story of how, by the UN’s Centenary in 2045, the young people of today deliver on all the promises the UN has made in the last 80 years: its promise to deliver a world free of nuclear weapons, Education and Health for all, to end Poverty and create a world that leaves no one behind. Chiefly, it tells how this generation will deliver the UN’s founding promise: “To save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” and the Brundtland promise: “To meet the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”
The UN Centenary Peace Child Script is a story of conscientious objectors mobilizing public support for the UN to fulfil its central purpose to save them “from the scourge of war.” But quickly, these young conscientious objectors find that there is a whole lot more happening in the world to which their consciences object with fear and revulsion. Though the UN has made some progress on many of issues and delivered the big wins of an end to Colonial Empires and, to date(!), avoiding World War III, the UN is looking increasingly marginalised. As Stephen Browne’s paper indicates, the end of multi-lateralism may be imminent as it becomes increasingly clear that the UN is not the institution to deliver on the upcoming challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution. Even the current Secretary-General, António Guterres, has stated: “We can’t build a future for our grand-children with a system built for our grand-parents”
So, the rising generation of “We the Young Peoples…” has to devise a different system of global collaboration to deliver on the UN’s promises and resolve the existential threats to our survival as a species. Peace Child is a safe creative space in which to imagine and discuss those different systems but it needs a wider audience. This is why our UN Centenary Peace Child Shows are designed to be woven into a Global TV series on the Past, Present and future of Global Collaboration.
