Analysis of the survey on youth initiatives

A second survey for the 6th World Youth Congress has been conducted after an interesting first one. In the first survey we learned that 87% of the participants managed to expand their networks and 77% were inspired to become young leaders. However, the follow up survey was intended to find out the progress of the participants in starting their own initiatives and resolutions, furthering their networking opportunities and mentoring other young people in their communities. Rio de Janeiro proved to be a global focal point for sustainable development in 2012, with the Rio+20 conference, the Road to Rio+20 campaign, and the 6th WYC all taking place in the Brazilian city.

The 350 delegates that attended the event

  • Witnessed “Youth Solutions” in action in the community.
  • Enjoyed a “Youth Solutions” Festival.
  • Cooperated on actions to leave a social and environmental legacy.

The virtual WYC, allowed young people from around the world access to workshops and presentations via live feeds on the internet.

The headline accomplishment of the congress was a list of 20 solutions for a sustainable future:

  • Put sustainability at the centre of education.
  • Let youth lead governments, corporations and society into sustainability.
  • Make it easy for youth to start businesses by providing capital, tax-breaks and reducing administrative bureaucracy.
  • Redesign our economy to be sustainable and to make people happy by moving away from insatiable consumption practices.
  • Shift to the use of renewable resources, and effectively make use of non-renewable resources to make this happen.
  • Make the best use out of energy – be efficient.
  • Reduce your footprint; soundly manage the waste you leave.
  • Sustain what all life is based on – water.
  • Enforce regulations against pollution, exploitation and degradation of our oceans.
  • Recognize the realities and impacts of climate change, take responsibility, demand accountability and act to reduce emissions.
  • Recognize the links between development and vulnerability to natural disasters, to integrate place-based disasters risk reduction and sustainable development.
  • Demand biodiversity conservation, the ending of mass species extinction and habitat degradation.
  • Recognize ecocide as a crime against humanity and nature.
  • Respect the right to healthcare.
  • Produce food for people and the planet, not just for money.
  • Restrict transnational corporations’ power over food systems.
  • Recognize gender empowerment and freedom of sexual and gender choice in a society free from discrimination.
  • Promote democratic youth representation amongst societies’ decision-making processes.
  • Make the world a non-conflict zone led by youth peacemakers.
  • Acknowledge that the respect of human rights is an integral part of sustainable development.
