How to get a job in Artificial Intelligence?

Google states that more than 65% of potential students will work in jobs that currently do not exist today. At PCI we want to help you prepare for that future role. To find a job role you need self-motivation and enthusiasm. To understand where to channel your search, at PCI we are in the early stages of creating a Virtual Jobs Board. The objective is a combined effort of the 45000+ strong PCI network, the team here at PCI and most importantly you.  

We have been looking into what skills, programmes and supporting partners are needed for industries such as Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality and Cloud Computing. Areas predicted to see a huge growth in the future. Artificial Intelligence, is a dynamic and exciting industry to work within, and it is far more accessible than you may think. AI is best described as a process to advance and improve the quality of experience. AI also aims to eliminate repetitive tasks. Much like the rise of domestic appliances in by-gone eras, the objective is to free up peoples time and ideally create a healthier lifestyle. 

Building and programming a robot from scratch may sound like an impossible task. 

In March 2018 the BBC Online New’s headline caught my eye:
Wanted: Robot wrangler, no experience required. “You must be analytical, detail-oriented, friendly and ready to walk. No advanced degree required.”

This idea of wrangling robots is being trialled by many technology companies, under job titles such as technicians, monitors, handlers and operations specialists. Analysts say it is clear such positions are growing. The McKinsey Global Institute believes new technology industries will generate between 20-45 million newly created positions by 2030, with new occupations representing 8-9% of the workforce staff.

 

Employers are looking for young people to develop a creative skill set they can apply to solve issues specific to their lives.

These roles require project staff for new ways to develop an irrigation system for crops, temperature monitoring solution, and the automatic dispensing of seed. Looking for those who have empathy with situations and can provide creative solutions. This has been the building blocks of the AI industry culture. Understanding how to cross over AI from one industry such as dispensing or prepping consumer products might also provide a solution to the dispensing of seed or soil to a location is a prime example.

Those most comfortable harnessing opportunities view learning as a challenge or a playful activity. Once you have worked out which areas of the industry will most suit your interests use online resources to gain some of the additional skills and knowledge you need. Technology fields are great at providing online courses for AI topics, allowing someone to learn more about the field as a whole. The industry is driven by the sharing of knowledge and that means learning from one another. Take this into account and use platforms to try out skills and ask questions.

Google is a great starting point to find resources. Providing programs to support and encourage students, linked to many partnering institutions to contact.
