Do you know what we should do? We should work together to overcome the challenge of youth unemployment. That way we can share expertise, create more fully rounded solutions and give young people the best possible chance to succeed in their futures. A shining example of the potential of this model comes in the shape of Building Young Futures; a partnership between Barclays and UNICEF. The aim of this collaboration is to help tackle global youth unemployment by providing financial and enterprise skills to young people. Obviously, the financial know-how offered by Barclays comes in handy here, but so too does the grass-roots experience of UNICEF.

Building Young Futures has been running since 2008 and in that time it has given 600,000 young people from 13 countries improved education opportunities. After such a Herculean effort it would be a crying shame to let all that good work go to waste. Luckily, Barclays and UNICEF have no such intentions and are instead seeking to improve the programme through the development of more in depth and adaptable trainings that will cater for the specific needs of different regions and individuals.

As we speak this new and improved Building Young Futures is being rolled out in 6 countries – Brazil, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Uganda and Zambia. The aim is to help 74,000 disadvantaged young people living in those countries. David Bull, Chief Executive of UNICEF UK, says that it will help

“more young people get a job, start a business and build the confidence and skills they need to create the future they deserve.”

Not to be outdone, Antony Jenkins, Barclays Group Chief Executive, adds “Our partnership with UNICEF helps young people to develop the skills and confidence they need to gain employment and to become active participants in their local economies.”

Great things happen when we work together. If you want to find out more about how collaborative efforts, such as Building Young Futures, can help create jobs for young people come to the International Youth Job Creation Summit.
