Young entrepreneurs in Egypt are part of a new wave of self-employment sweeping the nation, and Mostafa Shahat writes about them.

The revolution of the internet and social media channels have affected the way companies are marketing their services and products. Nowadays, it’s much easier to reach to target audiences through online channels rather than relying on only traditional marketing tools (newspapers, TV, etc.).

Arab region countries have evolved heavily to utilise the internet, mainly relying on different social media platforms. After the Arab Spring in 2011, they’re considered the main tools of the Egyptian Revolution in January 2011.

Many entrepreneurs have used online marketing tools to either advocate for community issues or start their start-ups and market their products and/or services. It is becoming a trend to do this not just in Egypt, but in all Arabian countries.

The number of internet users in Egypt has exceeded fifty millions users, which creates an online market for companies and creates a new branch of marketing called e-marketing.

Ossama Elbadawy, a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Economic and Political Science at Cairo University, specialised in Economics and co-founded in 2009 eMarketing Egypt, the fastest gorwing internet marketing consulting company in Egypt and the first online competitive intelligence (OCI) consulting for the internet businesses in the Middle East.

Ossama worked for four years as a Senior Economic Researcher at the Information & Decision Support Center in Egypt, and then he moved to MAC Carpet Egypt as head of the Business Intelligence Unit. Ossama is working currently as an Online Competitive Intelligence manager at eMarketing Egypt, where he is responsible for running the online competitive intelligence operations for both the company’s and customers’ needs.

eMarketing Egypt has provided its services to more than 100 customers from more than eleven countries in the Middle East as well Europe. They have hired more than 25 employees and conducted 40 training rounds. Each round lasts for two months and involves more than 500 professionals in the e-marketing field.

Ossama used to volunteer with a youth community in Egypt named G.O.L. to deliver workshops and trainings to more than 600 entrepreneurs in the marketing and e-marketing field. He was also one of the founders of Ashab Makan (meaning ‘the owners of the place’ in English), which is a newspaper that focuses on spreading awareness of Egyptian culture to young people and organises cultural events.

“Entrepreneurs are always on a learning journey”, says Ossama. “I never stopped learning”.

eMarketing Egypt was funded by TIEC , and they are organising a yearly event named “E-Marketing insights annual report”, which gives regular updates on customer behavior in Egypt with online marketing and their reaction to online advertising as well provide statistics about the internet users’ demographics.
